Blagoveschenka ( Russian Благовещенка ) is an urban-type settlement in the Altai region in southern Western Siberia ( Russia ) with 11,626 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is in the Kulunda steppe , in the southeast of the West Siberian lowlands , about 270 kilometers west of the regional capital Barnaul . A few kilometers northwest of the settlement is the Kulundasee , southwest the smaller, very salty Kutschuksee .

Blagoveschenka is the administrative center of the Blagoveschenka Rajon of the same name .

history

The place was created in 1908 (according to other information in 1907) in connection with the settlement and reclamation of the Kulunda steppe. The name is from the Russian Blagoweschtschenije for the Annunciation .

The population grew strongly, especially after the opening of the Barnaul – Kulunda railway line in 1953 (on to Pavlodar , now Kazakhstan ) and with the construction of a chemical plant based on the sulphate salts of Lake Kuchuk near the nearby settlement of Stepnoje Osero .

In 1961 Blagoveshchenka received urban-type settlement status .

Economy and Infrastructure

Blagoveshchenka is the center of an important agricultural area; there are various companies in the food industry.

The railway line Barnaul – Kulunda – Pavlodar (station name Novoblagoweschenka ) and the road from Barnaul via Rebricha or from Kamen am Ob through the central part of the Kulunda steppe to Kulunda run through the village .
