Juschny ( Russian Ю́жный ) is an urban-type settlement in the Altai region in southern Western Siberia ( Russia ) with 19,233 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The settlement is located in the northern foreland of the Altai , about 12 kilometers southwest of the center of the regional capital Barnaul and a few kilometers from the left bank of the Ob . Immediately north of the settlement extends the north-eastern end of the forest area "Barnauler Bandwald" ( Barnaulski lentotschny bor ).

As a suburb of the city of Barnaul, Juschny is subordinate to the administration of the Barnaul Stadtrajon Zentralny ("Zentralrajon").

history

The settlement was created from 1958 in connection with the construction of the Altai equipment building "Rotor" ( Altaiski priborostroitelny sawod "Rotor" ) as a residential area for its employees. The plant, which is partly underground in the adjacent forest area, has changed its name several times in its history. It produces electro-mechanical and electronic devices, originally exclusively for military purposes, from 1965 mainly navigation equipment for civil and military inland and maritime shipping, including icebreakers and submarines , but since the 1980s also household electrical systems for the civil sector.

The mostly multi-storey brick-built residential buildings ( "Khrushchevki" ) were given the status of an urban-type settlement in 1964.
