The Steinsburg Museum is a museum for the prehistory and early history of South Thuringia . It is a branch of the Museum of Prehistory and Early History of Thuringia and is located in the Römhild district of Waldhaus between the large and the small Gleichberg .

History and description

The museum was founded and built in 1929 on the private initiative of Christian Heurich . Alfred Götze was the first director and leader of the first excavations on the Kleiner Gleichberg .

The permanent exhibition of the Steinsburg Museum is arranged chronologically . The prehistory and early history of southern Thuringia is dealt with in 5 rooms on 180 m² of exhibition space . Significant exhibits include the archaeological finds from the excavations of the Celtic oppidum Steinsburg and a reconstructed flat grave from the Latène period , a find from Einhausen near Meiningen .

The Steinsburg Museum is also the first stage destination on the Celtic Adventure Trail . This 196 km long cultural hiking trail begins in Römhild and leads to uncovered evidence and traces of the Celtic population to the Gleichbergen and the Haßberge , through the Main Valley and the Steigerwald to Bad Windsheim .
