Rubzowsk ( Russian Рубцо́вск ) is a city in the Altai region in southern Western Siberia ( Russia ) with 147,002 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). It is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .

geography

The city is located on the railway line (Rubzowka station) and the Barnaul - Semipalatinsk ( Kazakhstan ) highway 280 km southwest of Barnaul in the forest steppes north of the Altai on the Alei River , a left tributary of the Ob .

The climate is continental with an average January temperature of −17.5 ° C and an average July temperature of +20.5 ° C. The mean annual rainfall is 370 mm.

history

The place was founded in 1886 as the village Rubzowo ( Рубцово ) (later Rubzowka), named after the first settler Mikhail Rubzow from the Samara governorate . In 1892 the residents received the right to use the land; this year is considered the official year of foundation.

In 1915 the railway line Novonikolajewsk (now Novosibirsk ) - Barnaul - Semipalatinsk, part of the later Turksib , was opened by Rubzowsk, which brought with it an initial economic boom.

In 1927, the town was given town charter while it was renamed Rubzowsk.

During the years of the Great Patriotic War , an agricultural machine plant from Odessa and the Kharkov tractor plant were relocated to Rubtsovsk. As a result, the Altaiski Traktorny Zavod came into being and the number of inhabitants of the city multiplied.

In Rubzowsk there was a prisoner of war camp 511 for German prisoners of war of the Second World War .

Culture and sights

The Archangel Michael Church

The city has a drama theater and a local museum.

The wooden Archangel Michael Church (Zerkow Michaila Archangela, 1906) has been preserved.

economy

The largest industrial companies in the city are the agricultural machinery plant "Sibagromasch" (emerged from "Altaiselmasch"), the tractor plant of the AG "Alttrak" ("Altaiski tractor") and other agricultural, vehicle and mechanical engineering companies. Rubzowsk is also the location of the light and food industry and the building materials industry.

In Rubzowsk there are branches of the Technical Altai University (Barnaul) and the "Open Regional University". The city has 27 middle schools (2002).
