Stepnoje Osero ( Russian Степно́е О́зеро ) is an urban-type settlement in the Altai region ( Russia ) with 6672 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The settlement is located about 270 km in a straight line west-southwest of the regional administration center Barnaul in Kulunda steppes , just over 2 km from the northeastern shore of salty Kutschuksees and 10 km from the south end of the Kulundasees removed. Immediately south-east of the settlement is the smaller Lake Selitrowoje (" Saltpeter Lake ").
Stepnoje Osero belongs to the Blagoveshchensky Rajon and is located 6 km south-southwest of its administrative seat Blagoveschenka and is the only town in the municipality of Stepnoosjoroski possowet .
history
The place was created in 1960 in connection with the construction of a chemical plant. In 1984 Stepnoje Osero received urban-type settlement status. The name means steppe lake.

Economy and Transport
The building company is the chemical plant of OAO Kutschuksulfat, one of the largest producers of sodium sulfate in Russia based on the salt extracted from the Kutschuk Lake . The salt is transported between the lake and the plant by a narrow-gauge railway . The plant is connected to the broad gauge network of the Russian State Railways via a connecting railway , which leads to Blagoveschenka, where the Novoblagoveschenka station is located at kilometer 71 of the Kulunda - Barnaul line, which opened in 1953 .
To the east of the village runs the regional road R372 from Blagoweschenka , which joins the R371 Aleisk - Kulunda - Kazakh border about 40 km southeast near Rodino .
