Novoaltaisk ( Russian Новоалтайск ) is a city in the Altai region on the mountainous edge of Western Siberia (Asian part of Russia ). It has 70,437 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
Novoaltaisk is a satellite city of the regional capital Barnaul, about 12 km east of it, on the right bank of the Ob and on its tributary Tschesnokowka . The city is administratively directly subordinate to the region and at the same time the administrative center of the Pervomaiski Rajons .
Novoaltaisk is an important railway junction where the Novosibirsk - Barnaul - Semei lines cross with the South Siberian Railway from the direction of Pavlodar via Barnaul into the Kuznetsk Basin . A little further north, the Central Siberian Railway from Omsk via Karassuk and Kamen am Ob is also connected to these routes.
The M52 Novosibirsk - Mongolian border also runs through Novoaltaisk , from which the A349 branches off via Barnaul to the Kazakh border.
history
Since the middle of the 18th century, the village of Tschesnokowka has been known in place of today's Novoaltaisk . With the construction of the Altai Railway Novonikolajewsk - Barnaul - Semipalatinsk (opened in 1915, later extended to the Turkestan-Siberian Railway or Turksib ) the importance of the village grew. At the same time, the branch line to Biysk was opened here. In 1934 a wood processing plant was completed. After the beginning of the Great Patriotic War in 1941 shifted to the Dniprodserschynsker railroad car factory here (now Altai Wagon ). In 1942 the place received town rights, in 1962 it was renamed Novoaltaisk (Russian for new Altai town ).

economy
In addition to the Altaiwagon plant for the production of freight wagons, other rail transport companies, the construction industry (precast concrete parts, floor coverings, road construction) and the woodworking industry also shape the cityscape. There are also companies in the food industry, as the city is the center of an agricultural area.
