Altaiskoje ( Russian Алта́йское ) is a large village (selo) in the Altai region ( Russia ) with 13,713 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is on the northern edge of the Altai Mountains , just under 200 km as the crow flies (245 km road) southeast of the regional capital Barnaul . It stretches for more than 10 km in the valley of the Kamenka , a left tributary of the Ob river Katun . To the north and east of the village, the unforested peaks of the foothills of the Altai still rise to a good 500  m , while in the southwest the Tscherga ridge (Tscherginski ridge) overgrown with mixed forest (predominantly aspens , birches and pines ) already reaches a height of over 1000  m .

Altaiskoje is the administrative center of the Altaiskoje Rajons (Altaiski).

history

The village was founded in 1808 as Verkhnyaya Kamenka ("Upper Kamenka", derived from the name of the river; the village of Nizhnyaya Kamenka, now shorter Nizhnekamenka, "Lower Kamenka" is a few kilometers north, i.e. downstream). In 1834 the village was already known as Altaiskoje (about "Altai village"). In the course of the 19th century it developed into an important center for trade with the mountain regions of the Altai. A large number of handicraft businesses sprang up, and at the turn of the century the village was one of the largest towns in the region.

As part of the administrative reorganization in the Soviet period, Altaiskoje became the administrative center of a newly founded Rajon in 1925. In 1961 the status of an urban-type settlement was given and the name Altaiski was introduced.

Since 1992, Altaiskoje has been a "rural settlement" again under the old name Altaiskoje, like a number of comparable towns in the region with an agricultural orientation, despite the growing population .

Culture and sights

In Altaiskoje there is a local museum of the Rajons, which was built in 1964 . It has been located in the current building since 1995, some of which dates from 1890 and is a listed building.

Economy and Infrastructure

In Altaiskoje there are farms processing agricultural products and the construction industry. The Rajon is dominated by agriculture and forestry. There are also various tourist destinations. Most of these are close to the border with the neighboring Republic of Altai , such as the warm Lake Aja , and therefore have little relation to the administrative center of Altaiskoje.

The nearest train station is a good 70 km north in Biysk . The regional road R369 runs through the village, which branches off the R368 leading to Belokuricha in Katunskoje, about 20 km south of Biysk on the left bank of the Katun and follows the course of the Kamenka upwards. To the south of Altaiskoje, the road crosses the approximately 900  m high Komarski pass , in sections unpaved, and in Tscherga , already in the Altai Republic, it is connected to the M52 trunk road , the "Tschujatrakt".
