Alex De Angelis (born February 26, 1984 in Rimini , Emilia-Romagna , Italy ) is a San-Marinese motorcycle racer . In 2003 he became vice world champion in the 125 cm³ class of the motorcycle world championship .

Career

Motorcycle world championship

De Angelis began motorcycling as a child , initially on minibikes . He later drove in the Italian 125 cc championship . At the age of 15 he had his first appearance in the world championship at the Imola Grand Prix in 1999 , when he was eliminated.

Alex De Angelis has been a regular driver in the world championship since the 2000 season , first on a Honda , and from 2002 for Aprilia . In 2003 he was runner- up behind the Spaniard Dani Pedrosa in the 125 cm³ class. For the following season he switched to the 250 cm³ class, where his height of 180 cm, which is relatively high for a motorcycle racer, was no longer as big a disadvantage as in the eight-liter class. In his 250cc rookie season , De Angelis already managed to achieve two podiums and one pole position . He finished the season in fifth place overall. This upward trend helped him in 2005 to a place in the MS Aprilia Italia Corse- - factory team , where he on the side of the Italian Simone Corsi took. There he was able to increase to four podium places, but he lacked constancy due to his own and third-party falls, so the San Marine only finished seventh in the final bill. In the 2006 season , Jorge Martínez gave him the opportunity to compete in his well-run team in the quarter-liter class. De Angelis rewarded this decision at the Valencia Grand Prix with his first win, six second and three third places. But four falls robbed him of his title chances, but at least it was third place in the World Cup. In 2007, even more consistency helped him again to third place in the World Cup, De Angelis, like the previous season, only had to admit defeat to the Italian Andrea Dovizioso and the Spanish superstar Jorge Lorenzo . For the 2008 season he climbed into the MotoGP class together with Lorenzo and Dovizioso . Alex De Angelis got a place next to Shin'ya Nakano in Fausto Gresini's San Carlo Honda team . The San Marines adapted quickly and drove quickly to a high level, but he could not convert good training performances into racing results. This was due to the fact that he was only able to make minor use of the qualifying tires with better grip and often only had poor starting positions, which made the races more difficult. However, two highlights crowned De Angelis' season, in the Italian Grand Prix in Mugello and in the German Grand Prix at the Sachsenring , he narrowly missed the podium twice with fourth place. In the World Cup table, De Angelis was only able to take 14th place due to numerous falls.

In 2009 Alex De Angelis joined the Gresini team again, and in 2010 he drove in the newly created Moto2 class for the Scot Racing Team alongside the Italian Niccolò Canepa . In 2011 he switched to the JIR Moto2 team and was able to claim an excellent fourth place in the World Championship at the end of the season. In the 2012 season he will drive again in Moto2 for Mobile NGM Forward Racing , his teammate is the Japanese Yūki Takahashi .

At the San Marino Grand Prix 2010 he was one of the two drivers who could no longer evade Shōya Tomizawa's fall and ran him over, whereupon Tomizawa died. De Angelis suffered no serious injuries.

De Angelis competed in the 2011 season in the JIR Moto2 team. He ended up fourth overall on a Motobi . In 2012 he drove an entire Moto2 season. But now in the Forward Racing Team. He contested the first six races on a Suter . From Assen on , his team changed chassis manufacturer and he drove with FTR for the rest of the season . In 2013 he remained loyal to Forward Racing. His racing motorcycle was now a speed up . In addition, there was also a deployment in MotoGP for him. Since Ben Spies was injured, De Angelis stepped in as a substitute driver in Laguna Seca . This was possible because only the premier class competed there. He drove the first 10 races of the 2014 season again in the Moto2 class in the Tasca Racing Moto2 team on Suter. He switched back to MotoGP for the rest of the season. Now as a substitute driver for Colin Edwards , who ended his career after the Indianapolis Grand Prix .

In 2015 he stayed in MotoGP. As the only driver of the iodo racing team, he drives an ART of the old CRT category .

As part of the Japanese Grand Prix , De Angelis had a hard crash in fourth free practice. He suffered broken ribs , a bruised lung , a traumatic brain injury and had to be put into an artificial coma for a short time after the onset of cerebral hemorrhage . After eight days in the intensive care unit , the doctors in the Japanese mibu declared him stable enough to be able to transport him to San Marino.

At the season finale in Valencia , De Angelis had recovered enough that he could be there as a visitor.

Superbike World Championship

After the IodaRacing team (to which Alex De Angelis is under contract) announced in early February, shortly before the start of the 2016 season , that they would be competing in the Superbike World Championship , De Angelis also confirmed his move to this championship. Together with his team mate, the Italian Lorenzo Savador, he will compete on an Aprilia RSV4 .

Personal

His older brother William De Angelis is also a motorcycle racer and competed in the 125 cm³ class of the motorcycle world championship from 1999 to 2001 .
