Julio Ricardo Cruz (born October 10, 1974 in Santiago del Estero ) is a former Argentine football player on the position of a striker. In his career he played in Argentina for a few years and came to Italy via Feyenoord Rotterdam , where he played for FC Bologna , Inter Milan and most recently Lazio Rome .
Career
In the club
Cruz began his career as a professional footballer in the first division of Argentina in 1993 at Club Atlético Banfield , after a brief interlude in 1996/97 at River Plate , he moved to Europe.
His first European club was Feyenoord Rotterdam in the Dutch first division from 1997 to 2000 , where he scored 44 goals in 87 league games. In the 1998/99 season he won the Dutch championship and the Johan Cruyff Schaal with Feyenoord .
He has been playing in Italy since 2000; first three years for FC Bologna and since 2003 with Inter Milan. In the second leg of the second leg of the Champions League 2006/07 season against Valencia CF there were tussles after the final whistle. The turmoil began after Valencia captain Carlos Marchena kicked Nicolás Burdisso following a verbal argument . Almost all of the players were involved in fights on the center circle, including Cruz. As a result, the Argentine was suspended from UEFA for two games .
In the 2007/08 season he won the Italian championship with Inter Milan for the third time in a row . He scored 13 goals in a total of 28 games and was instrumental in winning the Nerazzuri title .
On June 10, 2009, Inter Milan President Massimo Moratti announced that Cruz's expiring contract would not be renewed. He then signed a one-year contract, with an option for another year, with Lazio Rome .
In the national team
Cruz made his debut for the Argentine national team on February 2, 1997 in a 2-1 win over Bolivia . After an excellent 1998/99 season at Feyenoord, he returned to the Argentine national team in June 1999 after almost two years. However, a last-minute thigh injury prevented his participation in the 1999 Copa America . For this he was part of the Argentine squad at the 2006 World Cup in Germany . After being eliminated on penalties against Germany , he got into a tangible turmoil and received a punch from Torsten Frings .
