Nicolás Andrés Burdisso (born April 12, 1981 in Altos de Chipión , Province of Córdoba ) is a former Argentine football player who was last under contract with FC Turin in the Italian Serie A.
Career
In the club
The defender Burdisso was trained at the Boca Juniors in Buenos Aires , where he began his professional career at the age of 18 in 1999. With Boca he won the Argentine championship twice ( Apertura 2000 and 2003), three times the Copa Libertadores (2000, 2001 and 2003) and twice the World Cup (2000 and 2003).
In the summer of 2004 he moved from Boca Juniors to the traditional Italian club Inter Milan for a transfer fee of € 3.5 million, where he signed a four-year contract. He missed the 2004/05 season almost completely because he returned to Argentina to help his daughter who had leukemia . For the 2005/06 season returned to the team and won the Coppa Italia with Inter . At the end of August 2006 he extended his contract with Inter until 2009. When Inter legend Giacinto Facchetti died in 2006, Burdisso received jersey number 16 instead of 3, as Facchetti's number 3 was no longer awarded. Burdisso scored two of his four league goals for Inter in the game against Messina (November 29, 2006, 4-0) and another brace on January 27, 2007 in a 3-0 win against Sampdoria Genoa . In the second leg of the second leg of the Champions League 2006/07 season against Valencia CF , there were tussles after the final whistle. The turmoil began after Valencia's captain Carlos Marchena kicked Burdisso after a verbal battle. Almost all players were then involved in fights on the center circle. David Navarro stormed into the field and broke Burdisso's nasal bone with a punch. Burdisso was suspended for six European Cup games and Navarro was suspended for six months. On March 12, 2008 Burdisso played his first Champions League match after the suspension against Liverpool , but was sent off in the 60th minute with a yellow-red. During his time at Inter, Burdisso acted as a center- back , but also as a right and left-back . In 2009 he won his fourth championship in a row with Inter. By then, Burdisso had won 19 titles in his career and is the second most successful Argentine football player after Alfredo di Stéfano with 21 titles.
On August 22, 2009 Burdisso was awarded for a year to AS Roma , which offered him an annual salary of € three million. Just one day after his engagement, he played the opening game of Serie A 2009/10 for the Romans . Burdisso scored his first goal for the "Roma" on December 20, 2009. In a 2-0 win against FC Parma , he scored 1-0.
For the 2010/11 season he signed a four-year contract with AS Roma, the transfer fee should have been around eight million euros. Burdisso also announced that he would like to end his career with the Boca Juniors . At AS Roma, he played for the first time with his younger brother Guillermo in a team that season before he left the club for Arsenal in summer 2011 .
On January 12, 2014 Burdisso completed his 100th Serie A game for Roma. On January 23, 2014 Burdisso moved to CFC Genoa .
On August 31, 2017 Burdisso moved to Turin FC . At the end of the season, his contract was not renewed. In October 2018, Burdisso ended his active career at the age of 37 after a total of over 300 games in Serie A.
In the national team
With the youth selection of the Argentine national team , Nicolás Burdisso won the 2001 World Junior Cup in Argentina. With the amateur team of Argentina, he won the gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games .
During the World Cup in 2006 he was only a substitute defender behind the experienced Roberto Ayala and the captain Juan Pablo Sorín , but he came in a total of three appearances in the preliminary round. In the quarter-finals, he failed with his country against hosts Germany 3-5 on penalties.
In the summer of 2007, he again took part in the Copa America . Burdisso was used as a substitute during the tournament once. The tournament victory was denied him, however, because Argentina, as in 2004, lost in the final against Brazil .
In 2008 Burdisso scored his first goals for the national team in friendly matches against Egypt and Mexico.
In 2010 he was appointed by national coach Diego Maradona to the Argentina squad for the 2010 World Cup , but failed again in the quarter-finals to Germany.
