The Coppa Italia 2005/06 , the Italian cup competition , began in the 2005/06 season on August 6, 2005 with the first round matches. The two finals took place on May 3rd and 11th, 2006 between Inter Milan and AS Roma . Inter won the final after a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome and a 3-1 win at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium at home and thus celebrated the fifth success in the club's history. It was also the second edition of a series in which these two teams faced each other in the final from 2005 to 2008.

A total of 72 teams took part in the 58th edition of the highest Italian cup competition. These consisted of the entire Serie A of the 2005/06 season , the entire Serie B of the 2005/06 season and 30 clubs of the C1 and C2 series (today summarized as Lega Pro ). The Lega Italiana Calcio Professionistico took over the selection of the 30 clubs according to not entirely obvious criteria.
In addition to last year's winner Inter Milan, the teams from the 2004/05 season that qualified for a European Cup competition are seeded for the round of 16 . Although Lazio only finished tenth in the final table in 2005 , they were still able to qualify for the UI Cup because AS Livorno (9th place) had not registered for the UI Cup as a promoted team. The ACR Messina (7th place series) and Torino (3rd Series B) were denied by a court judgment of 25 July 2005, the license for the Serie A because of high debt loads. They were also not allowed to start in the Coppa Italia.
All other teams not seeded played games according to the knockout system up to the round of 16 . From the round of 16 onwards, a return match was played. Until the 2004/05 season , the other clubs in Serie A were also set for later rounds, but this was changed this year due to years of protests by the smaller clubs. The main problem, that there were no surprises in the cup and that the established clubs prevailed, remained, however, as the eight top clubs from last season are still seeded.
