The club was founded in 1919 under the name Unione Sportiva Cavese . In order to provide a more powerful team, the club merged three years later with local rivals Libertas Sporting Club . In the following season, the club took part for the first time in the southern group of the Italian championship. After three years at the top, the club withdrew in 1925 due to financial problems.
In the following years, the team played only under-class for a long time. In 1981 the club rose to Serie B and in 1983 was on the verge of returning to the top class , when even AC Milan were defeated at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium , but could only occupy sixth place in the table at the end of the season. In the following season, the success could not be continued and the club was relegated to the C1 series.
In 1991 the club had to file for bankruptcy and started in the regional leagues. From there it went up again, in 2006 the club returned to Serie C1.
In August 2018, Cavese returned to Serie C and thus to professional football after winning the play-offs .
