Urbs Reggina 1914 , known as Reggina Calcio until 2015, is an Italian football club based in the city of Reggio Calabria . Reggina plays its home games in the Stadio Oreste Granillo with a capacity of 27,454 . The club color is amaranth .

history

The club was founded on January 11, 1914 as Unione Sportiva Reggio Calabria. In the course of history, the association was re-established in 1944, 1986 and July 14, 2015. For financial reasons, the former Reggina Calcio 1986 spa owned by Lillo Foti has refrained from enrolling in the Lega Pro competition 2015/16.

In the 1964/65 season Reggina reached the first promotion in Serie B. From 1999 to 2009 Reggina was nine seasons in Serie A, seven of them uninterrupted. The best Serie A result was 12th place in the 1999/2000 season.

Reggina has played in the Italian Serie A and Serie B in recent years . In 2006 Reggina was involved in the football scandal surrounding Luciano Moggi and was punished with eleven points. Before the 2006/07 season acted as a certain relegation, Reggina secured the league with a home win against AC Milan on the last day of the game . In the 2008/09 season Reggina Calcio rose as the penultimate in Serie B. In 2013/14 Reggina was relegated to the Lega Pro - also because of a penalty point. Reggina took 19th place in the Lega Pro in the 2014/15 season (still as Reggina Calcio) and won the playouts in the derby against Messina (won 1-0 back and forth). On May 21st, the 4 penalty points previously deducted were reduced to 1. Reggina, however, did not manage to meet the requirements for remaining in Lega Pro and was excluded from the 2015/16 competition on July 14, 2015.

In the meantime, a new club has been created to represent the city of Reggio Calabria in football. The new club was re-established as ASD Reggio Calabria (Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Reggio Calabria) and started in Serie D from the 2015/16 season. The aim is to continue the more than 100-year history of football in the city of Reggio Calabria. The new president of the club is Mimmo Praticò. The new coach for the 2015/16 season of ASD Reggio Calabria is the former player Ciccio Cozza.

On March 8, 2016, ASD Reggio Calabria temporarily changed the club name to SSD Reggio Calabria SRL ( Società Sportiva Dilettantistica Reggio Calabria a Responsabilità Limitata) . On July 18, 2016, Reggina was added to the club name again . The club has been called Urbs Sportiva Reggina 1914 since then . Karel Zeman is the coach of the 2016/17 season. Reggina has been able to use the old stadium in Sant'Agata again since October 4th, 2016. A rental agreement was made for the use of the stadium.

On August 4, 2016, a decision by the FIGC decided that the previous 48 teams in the Lega Pro would be increased to 60. Reggina was thus approved for the Lega Pro (Serie C up to the 2007/08 season and since 2017/18; from 2008/09 to 2016/17 Lega Pro). There they finished the season in the Girone C 2016/17 with 13th place.

Coach Agenore Maurizi was signed for the 2017/18 season. On January 10, 2019, the transfer of ownership to M&G took place through the acquisition of 97.1% of the shares in Urbs Reggina 1914 Srl. Luca Gallo acquired 86.66% of the shares in P&P Sport Srl owned by the Praticò family and 10.44% in De Caridi and Simonetta.

Luca Gallo, President of M&G Holding Srl and sole owner of all companies belonging to M&G, takes on the role of President of Urbs Reggina 1914 Srl.

The club celebrates its 105th anniversary on January 11, 2019.

On May 21, 2018, the youth team coach and former Reggina player Roberto Cevoli signed an annual contract as head coach.

Reggina announces that it has acquired the Reggina Calcio brand and with it the logo, awards and titles of the former bankruptcy owner.

Reggina is Serie C champion of the 2019/20 season. The season has ended due to the COVID-19 pandemic . Reggina, who was in first place in the table at the time of the cancellation, was declared Series C champion and has thus secured direct promotion to Series B.
