Walter Alfredo Novellino (born June 4, 1953 in Montemarano , Avellino , Italy ) is a former Italian football player and current coach .

Career

player

As an attacking midfielder, Novellino made his Serie A debut at Torino in the 1972/73 season . He later played for Perugia , Ascoli and AC Milan . During his time at AC in 1978, his only appearance in the national team fell . With Milan he was Italian champion in 1978/79 under Nils Liedholm .

Trainer

Novellino began his coaching career in 1992 with a brief engagement with AC Perugia in Serie C1 . The following year he almost made promotion from Serie C2 with AS Gualdo Calcio , but the team lost the playoff game. He then trained in Serie B again Perugia, Ravenna Calcio and SSC Venice , with which he was promoted to Serie A in 1998 . This began a series of promotions to the first division: 2000 with SSC Napoli , 2001 with Piacenza Calcio and 2003 with Sampdoria Genoa . In his first Serie A season, he led Genoa to fifth place and into the UEFA Cup . Novellino stayed with Sampdoria until 2007; for the 2007/08 season he took over as coach at Turin FC . In April 2008 he was dismissed after the poor results and the relegation risk of Turin FC only five game days before the end of the season.

On June 11, 2009 Novellino was hired by Reggina Calcio , which has just been relegated to Serie B. On October 24, 2009, the expulsion takes place there too, after a defeat against FC Turin and only nine points from ten games.

He finally returned to the coaching business on February 12, 2011 and became a coach at AS Livorno as the successor to Giuseppe Pillon , where he worked until December 21, 2011. After a series of negative results, five lost games in a row, Walter Novellino is relieved of his coaching post by President Spinelli.

Interesting

Because of his resemblance to the Argentine boxer Carlos Monzón, he has been nicknamed Monzon .
