Giuseppe "Bepi" Pillon (born February 8, 1956 in Preganziol ) is a former Italian football player and today's coach .

Career

Player career

Pillon played for Pro Magliano and for three years in the youth team of Juventus Turin . Later he played mainly for teams in the C1 and C2 series , including four years for the traditional club Calcio Padova .

Coaching career

Early years: marching through to Serie B

Pillon began his coaching career in 1992 with the amateur club Salvarosa. He then moved to Bassano Virtus 55 ST and later FC Treviso in 1994. He led Treviso to three ascents in succession to the Series B . In 1997 he left Treviso and switched to Calcio Padova, but was released after a few weeks. In the 2001/02 season he managed with Ascoli Calcio 1898 to rise from Serie C1 to Serie B. At the beginning of the 2003/04 season, Pillon was still without a club, but took over AS Bari in January 2004 and saved the club from relegation .

Return to Treviso and Serie A with Chievo Verona

The following season (2004/05) Pillon was back from FC Treviso and led the team to the play-offs for the Serie A . Due to his good performance, Pillon was signed by Chievo Verona in the 2005/06 season and coached a club in Serie A for the first time in his career. In his debut in the first division, he led Chievo to a respectable sixth place, aided by the football scandal in in Serie A 2006 he even took part with Chievo in qualifying for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League , but where they were eliminated by Levski Sofia . After disappointing results in the 2006/07 season , Pillon was then on leave and replaced by Luigi Delneri .

Third term at Treviso and years of traveling

In 2007 Pillon was then again and for the third time coach of FC Treviso, this time together with his brother Albino as an assistant coach. Since Pillon was successful whenever he coached Treviso, one hoped for good results from him again this time, but this time Pillon could not meet expectations, ended up in last place with the club and was only barely able to prevent relegation. Because of these disappointing results, Pillon was dismissed and signed on December 16, 2008 with Reggina Calcio , who were at risk of relegation at that time. Here, too, Pillon did not deliver the desired success, the contract was terminated a month later after taking office on January 29, 2009. He then coached various clubs in Serie B.

Trivia

  • Pillon gained national attention during his tenure with Ascoli Calcio in 1898: In a game against Reggina Calcio, Ascoli scored a goal while a Reggina player was injured on the field. Pillon then instructed his team not to move and let Reggina score a goal, which the players did. Ascoli lost the game 3-1, after which Pillon was heavily criticized by the fans. However, Pillon defended his action and received the International Fair Play Prize in 2009 .
