Luigi Delneri (also written Luigi Del Neri ; born August 23, 1950 in Aquileia ) is a former Italian football player and today's coach .

Career

As a player

Delneri played in the amateur field of Italian football for a long time during his active career until he moved to Udinese Calcio in Serie A in 1978 . Later he moved to Sampdoria Genoa , Vicenza Calcio and AC Siena before he went back to the amateur field and let his career end.

As a trainer

The coaching career began again in the amateur sector: 1985 at USD Opitergina in Oderzo . Through this club he came to various lower class clubs before he joined FC Empoli in 1998. Here he was fired before the start of the season and returned to his former club Ternana Calcio back, with whom he briefly move up to the previous series B had managed. Delneri managed to keep Ternana in the second division and then moved to league rivals AC Chievo Verona , with whom he promptly made promotion. However, he could still beat this achievement, as he looks at his team in the first year in Serie A for the UEFA Cup who qualified.

In 2004 he said goodbye to Verona and moved to the newly crowned Champions League winner FC Porto in Portugal . But as in Empoli, he was dismissed before the start of the season. He later gave "personal reasons" as an explanation. This was followed by the move to AS Roma , which the former coach of the German national team , Rudi Völler , had resigned. After a mixed season he dropped out in March 2005 and signed a contract with US Palermo two months later . With the club he also took part in the UEFA Cup and celebrated good results just at the beginning of the season. But later he was unable to confirm this and was released in January of the next year.

In October 2006 he then returned to his old club Chievo Verona, which were in dire straits at the time. Delneri took on the task, but could not prevent relegation to Serie B. However, instead of going into the second division with his team, he dissolved his contract and moved to the first division club Atalanta Bergamo . In the summer of 2009 he took over the league competitor Sampdoria Genoa and led them to fourth place in the 2009/10 season and the associated participation in the qualifying games of the UEFA Champions League for the following season . On May 17, 2010 he left the association prematurely and ended his employment with the Blucerchiati .

For the 2010/11 season Delneri was hired by the Italian record champions Juventus Turin as a coach. He received a two-year contract and on July 1, 2010 succeeded Alberto Zaccheroni , who had looked after the team since January 2010. With Delneri, Giuseppe Marotta also moved from Genoa to Turin as general director for sporting matters . After a disappointing season that Juventus was only able to finish seventh in the table, the club parted ways with Delneri.

On October 23, 2012 Delneri took over the first division eleven of CFC Genoa from previously dismissed Luigi De Canio . After just two wins in 13 games, he was released on January 20, 2013.

From December 2015 to May 2016 Delneri Hellas trained Verona . He succeeded Andrea Mandorlini in the relegation-threatened first division club, but could not prevent relegation to Serie B either, whereupon his expiring contract was not extended.

In October 2016, Delneri was signed by Udinese Calcio to succeed Giuseppe Iachini , who was dismissed after just a few match days. In November 2017, Udinese released Delneri.
