Luigi De Canio (born September 26, 1957 in Matera ) is a former Italian football player and current coach . After a playing career that brought him up to Serie B , he coached various clubs in Serie A and was also active in English professional football.
Athletic career
De Canio initially played for FC Matera and SSD Città di Brindisi in the amateur field. In 1978 the defender moved back to FC Matera, with whom he rose to Serie B in 1979. After the direct relegation he later played for Calcio Chieti , US Salernitana , again for FC Matera and AS Livorno in the third division. From 1986 he ended his career in the lower class amateur area at Galatina Pro Italia .
In 1987 De Canio took up his first coaching position at PCS Pisticci as a player-coach. He went straight to Serie D with the club . In 1993 he took over AC Savoia in 1908 in Serie C2 and rose with the club as well. In 1995 he moved to AC Siena in Serie C1 . After an eighth place in the table, he moved on to FC Carpi after only one season within the league . Surprisingly, he led the team around Marco Materazzi into the promotion play-offs. Although the team had failed there, he had attracted higher class attention and was signed by the second division AS Lucchese Libertas . With the club he just managed to stay in the league, but was still released.
For a short time without a club, De Canio took over the coaching post at the second division side Delfino Pescara 1936 in autumn 1998 , with whom he just missed the promotion play-offs to Serie A when he was fifth . Then the first division Udinese Calcio signed him as a new coach; he qualified with the club for the UEFA Cup through the UEFA Intertoto Cup . In March 2001, the club was in a relegation battle, then he was dismissed and replaced by Luciano Spalletti . In the summer he took over the second division club SSC Napoli . After his missed promotion, he was released again at the end of the season.
In the fall of 2002 De Canio took over the first division club Reggina Calcio , which was in the relegation battle , with whom he managed to stay up. Nevertheless, he left the club and after a short time without a job he took over CFC Genoa in spring 2004 , where he was replaced by Serse Cosmi shortly before the start of the season after relegation to the second division . In January 2005 he returned to AC Siena, which he held in Serie A for two seasons.
In October 2007, De Canio took over the Queens Park Rangers in the second-rate English Football League Championship . After a 14th place in the table, he returned to Italy at the end of the season. From March 2009 he coached US Lecce in Serie A, but was sacked in the summer of 2011 after relegation. From April to October 2012 he engaged again CFC Genoa, from October 2013 to the beginning of 2014 he worked for Calcio Catania . In March 2016, De Canio began his second term as head coach of Udinese Calcio. His contract, which was running at the end of the season, was not renewed. After his release, he was signed by Ternana Calcio in February 2018 .
