Jorge Vargas (born February 8, 1976 in Santiago de Chile ) is a former Chilean football player , he played on the position of defender .
Career
Vargas started his career in his hometown of Santiago at Club Deportivo Universidad Católica . Here he played a total of four seasons before he moved abroad for the first time to Reggina Calcio in the Italian Serie A for the 1999/2000 season. In his second season in Reggio Calabria , the club rose to Serie B , but succeeded in direct promotion in the following season. For the 2003/04 season Vargas moved to Tuscany for FC Empoli . However, he left Empoli after just one season to move to AS Livorno . In Livorno he made the leap into the starting eleven straight away, where he was able to assert himself for a total of two years. For the 2006/07 season he moved to Austria for Red Bull Salzburg. Vargas has already made 38 international appearances for Chile. After several escapades, Vargas was bid farewell to the Salzburg team and returned to FC Empoli in 2008. For the 2009/10 season Vargas moved to AC Spezia Calcio in the Lega Pro Seconda Divisione . In early 2010 he left the club and returned to his home country, where he signed on with CD San Luis de Quillota . At the end of the 2010 season he had to relegate his team and then joined Deportes La Serena . He played there for two years until he was relegated with his club at the end of the 2012 season. He then ended his career.
After a drink before the quarter-final of the Copa America 2007 against Brazil (1: 6), Vargas was banned from the Chilean Football Association for 20 international matches.
In addition, the Chilean attracted negative attention in January 2008 when he and his Serbian team-mate Saša Ilić showed up too late for training for the second half of the 2008 season.
