Massimo Rastelli (born December 27, 1968 in Torre del Greco ) is a former Italian football player and current coach . As an active player for AS Lucchese Libertas , Piacenza Calcio and SSC Napoli , among others , he was successful as a coach at AS Avellino 1912 from 2012 to 2015 .

Player career

Massimo Rastelli began his footballing career in 1987 with the amateur club Solofra. From there he moved to 20-year-old 1988 US Catanzaro , in the second-rate time series B played. With Catanzaro, Massimo Rastelli ended the 1988/89 season in eleventh place in Serie B. He then played for AC Mantova in Serie C1 for one year , where he ended up fifth in the table.

From 1990 onwards, Massimo Rastelli played in the AS Lucchese Libertas jersey for seven years . Lucchese had just been promoted to Serie B when Rastelli joined the club, and with sixth place stayed sovereign as a climber. They were only two points away from Ascoli Calcio from returning to first class after a few decades. In the following period, Lucchese Libertas established himself in Serie B and achieved a number of placements in midfield. It was not until 1994/95 that it became a bit tricky again in the relegation battle. The following year, however, they finished sixth again and only just barely missed promotion to the first division. Massimo Rastelli played a total of 1990 to 1997 for AS Lucchese Libertas and made 222 league games for the club during that time, in which he scored fifty goals.

In 1997, the attacker moved to the first division club Piacenza Calcio , where he spent the following four years until 2001. After relegation was achieved in the first two seasons, Piacenza had to go back to the second division after the end of Serie A in 1999/2000 . In Serie B 2000/01 , however, the direct re-emergence succeeded immediately. When this was done, Massimo Rastelli left Piacenza Calcio after four years and 116 league games with twelve goals again. His new employer was the traditional club SSC Napoli , which at the time was in an existential crisis. Napoli had just been relegated from Serie A and narrowly missed promotion in Serie B 2001/02 in fifth. Massimo Rastelli played for SSC Napoli in 32 second division games and scored six goals. The following season the striker spent with first division promoted Reggina Calcio , where he was not a regular player. Reggina managed to stay close to the Serie A in 2002/03 . This goal failed at Como Calcio , for which Massimo Rastelli played in the following Serie B season. There he was, however, extremely unsuccessful and rose with Como Calcio as bottom of the table in the Lega Pro Prima Divisione.

In the summer of 2004 Rastelli moved to US Avellino , for whom he then played for two years. Like Como in the previous year, Avellino was relegated from Serie B, but made the direct return to the second division in the following year as second in Girone B of the Lega Pro Prima Divisione behind Rimini Calcio . There, however, the team overtook the direct relegation. From 2006 to 2008 Massimo Rastelli worked for Sorrento Calcio . With the southern Italian club, he rose to the third division in the first year as master of the Girone B of the C2 series . There the league succeeded in the following year. Massimo Rastelli had his last season as an active soccer player from 2008 to 2009 with the fourth division club SS Juve Stabia before ending his career in the summer of 2009 at the proud soccer age of forty.

Coaching career

After the end of his playing career, he took over the coaching position at his old club SS Juve Stabia in the summer of 2009. With the Campanians he took first place in the Lega Pro Seconda Divisione 2009/10 in the Girone C with a lead of four points on the US Catanzaro. This meant the promotion of Juve Stabia to the Lega Pro Prima Divisione. A little later, the club and coach parted ways, Rastelli's successor was Piero Braglia , who finally led Juve Stabia to Serie B. Rastelli took over after eight matchdays of the following season in the same league as coach at Football Brindisi 1912 and led the club to thirteenth place in the table that season, but after the end of the season Brindisi went bankrupt and had to be relegated. In the summer of 2011, Massimo Rastelli hired as the new coach of the third division team Calcio Portogruaro Summaga , with whom he finished tenth in the Lega Pro Prima Divisione Girone B. After the end of the season, the engagement was not extended.

In the summer of 2012, Massimo Rastelli became the new coach of the third division club AS Avellino 1912 . Rastelli played a strong season with the former first division club and ended up in first place in the Girone B of the Lega Pro Prima Divisione. With two points ahead of AC Perugia Calcio , this meant promotion to Serie B. There, as a climber in Serie B in 2013/14 with eleventh place in the table, he was able to confidently stay in the league. In the following year, Avellino ended the second division season under Rastelli as eighth and was thus eligible to participate in the playoff games for promotion to Serie A. There they played the first round against Spezia Calcio with 2-1 after extra time victorious. In the second round, however, came against FC Bologna just the corner. For the 2015/16 season , Rastelli was the new coach of Cagliari Calcio . He was released on October 17, 2017.
