Walter Mazzarri (born October 1, 1961 in San Vincenzo (LI) , Italy ) is a former Italian football player . He was involved in the promotions of FC Empoli to Serie A and Acireale Calcio to Serie B. Today Mazzarri is a coach and had his most successful time with SSC Napoli.

Player career

Midfielder Mazzarri learned his trade in the youth system of Fiorentina . He made his professional debut in 1981 for Pescara Calcio in Serie B . For a short time he played in Serie A at Cagliari Calcio before being sold to AC Reggiana . Mazzarri ran the longest for FC Empoli , where he was also involved in the first ascent of the team from Tuscany . After some experience with smaller teams, the Italian was involved in the first promotion of Acireale Calcio to Serie B in 1993 . In 1995 he ended his career with Sassari Torres .

Coaching career

In 1998 Walter Mazzarri started his career as assistant coach to Renzo Ulivieri at SSC Napoli . In 2001/02 he became a coach at the Sicilian Series C2 club SSD Acireale Calcio , where he had already played from 1992 to 1994. In 2002/03 Mazzarri returned to his home in Tuscany as coach of the Serie C2 team AC Pistoiese . 2003/04 led the Series B club AS Livorno back to the Serie A . In the years 2004 to 2007 he managed to hold Reggina Calcio from Calabria in Serie A three times , last year despite a deduction of eleven points.

From June 2007 to June 2009 he was the coach of Sampdoria Genoa . From October 2009 he coached the SSC Napoli as the successor to Roberto Donadoni . In the 2010/11 season he reached third place in the league with his team, which qualified Naples for the 2011/12 Champions League . In this, the southern Italians were only eliminated in the last sixteen against the eventual winner Chelsea FC . Mazzarri also won the 2011/12 Coppa Italia with Naples . In May 2013, after Napoli lost the last game of the 2012/13 season against AS Roma 2-1, he announced his immediate departure as coach at Napoli, despite his side becoming runners-up. Less than a week later, on May 24, 2013, Mazzarri was introduced as the new coach of Inter Milan , where he replaced Andrea Stramaccioni . At the beginning of July 2014, Inter extended Mazzarri's contract for another year until June 30, 2016, but was released in mid-November 2014.

In May 2016 Mazzarri became the new coach of the English first division club Watford . He looked after him during the 2016/17 season , at the end of which the team narrowly escaped relegation. Mazzarri was then released.

From January 2018 to February 2020, Mazzarri coached Turin FC .
