The Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Acireale Calcio is an Italian football club from Acireale . The club was founded in 1946 and plays its home games in the Stadio Tupparello , which can seat 8,000 spectators. Acireale Calcio has played in Serie B for two years and is currently in the Eccellenza , the fifth highest division in Italy .

history

Today's ASD Acireale Calcio was founded in 1946 under the name Associazione Sportiva Acireale in the city of Acireale , which now has around 50,000 inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Catania in Sicily . When the club was founded, the club colors were set to red and white, which are still valid today. The team's first coach was Luigi Bertolini , who was part of the Italian team that won the 1934 World Cup in their own country. Under Bertolini of the newly founded association ended his first season ever in seventh place of Girone C of the Lega Interregional Sud of Series C . Overall, the AS Acireale played third class until 1951, before a few years of lower class football followed. Only in 1958 succeeded in returning to the IV series, at that time the fourth highest division in Italian football. With the renaming of this league to Serie D , AS Acireale played there in the sequence until 1969, before the Girone I was the first to return to the third division before Polisportiva Paternò . They stayed there for six years, with the best placement during this time being fourth in the Girone C of the 1972/73 season. After relegation from Serie C in 1976, AS Acireale established itself in the fifth division, where they played continuously between 1976 and 1989.

From 1989 the surprising upswing of AS Acireale began with the rise to the C2 series . There they were able to establish themselves in the upper third of the table and made the leap to Serie C1 after only two years . Under coach Giuseppe Papadopulo , AS Acireale managed a surprising promotion to Serie B in the 1992/93 season , for the first time in the club's history. This was achieved by a second place in the Girone B of the C1 series, only behind the US Palermo . In Serie B 1993/94 , AS Acireale managed to stay sixteenth just as surprisingly. Only the better goal difference compared to SC Pisa saved the team around Walter Mazzarri and Arturo Di Napoli from direct relegation. However , Acireale could not intercept the departure of coach Papadopulo to US Avellino in the summer of 1994. Under the new coach Fausto Silipo , the club had to relegate from Serie B after two years of membership after missing relegation by one point against AS Lucchese Libertas .

For AS Acireale, these two years should remain the only ones in Serie B to date. In the following period, the club shuttled between third and fourth league, before going bankrupt in 2006 and was re-established as Società Sportiva Dilettantistica Acireale Calcio . After restarting the Promozione Sicilia, Acireale slowly worked its way up again and qualified again for the then fifth-rate Serie D for the 2010/11 season. However, the financial problems continued and the club had to be re-established in 2014. Now operating under the name Associazione Sportiva Dilettantistica Acireale Calcio , they have been playing in the Eccellenza Sicilia ever since.
