Luigi Bertolini (born September 13, 1904 in Busalla ( GE ), Italy , † February 11, 1977 ) was an Italian football player and coach .

Career

Luigi Bertolini began his career in the 1920s as an attacker at the Savona 1907 FBC , at that time he was still working full-time as a steel worker in Savona . During this time he was discovered by the US Alessandria , a club that had a very good team, but was not particularly wealthy. Therefore, in order to be able to oblige him, they promised to get him a good job, which, however, was not kept.

At Alessandria, where Bertolini played from 1927 to 1931, he was retrained as a midfielder under coach Carlo Carcano . On December 1, 1929, he made his debut in the Italian national team against Portugal , Bertolini played a total of 26 times for Italy.

At the end of the 1930/31 season Luigi Bertolini was signed by Juventus Turin , where he would play for six years. For Juve , he played a total of 135 games and scored five goals. He was part of the legendary Quinquennio d'Oro team , which under coach Carlo Carcano won five Italian championships in a row between 1931 and 1935 , a record that has not yet been broken.

In the summer of 1934 he was also a regular under Vittorio Pozzo with the national team world champion in his own country. In the same year Bertolini stood for Italy in the legendary, as the Battle of Highbury went down in history, 2-3 defeat against England on the field.

In 1937, Luigi Bertolini ended his professional career at the age of 33 and worked as a player- coach at the lower class AC Rapallo until 1940 . After the war he worked as a trainer at Acireale Calcio . In the 1951/52 season Bertolini was ten game days coach at Juventus Turin. The following year he retired from the football business after a disappointing interlude at the coaching bench in Brescia Calcio .

Luigi Bertolini died in 1977 at the age of 72.
