Inside the biosphere

The Potsdam Biosphere is a tropical house in the city of Potsdam . The biosphere building is located in the Volkspark Potsdam , a newer park in the north of Potsdam.

history

The former military area on Bornstedter Feld was specially prepared for the 2001 Federal Garden Show . The design for the building comes from the Berlin architects Barkow Leibinger .

The building houses around 20,000 tropical plants with around 350 different species and tropical animals (including iguanas , snakes, spiders, frogs, praying mantises , free-range geckos and pheasants ). Soil, water and air are used as design elements on several levels. The biosphere differs significantly from classic botanical gardens in its concept as a nature experience world or event location with changing special topics relating to nature. Especially in the winter months there are regular evening events for adults and children, and a treasure hunt and a jungle adventure are offered for groups of children. The Biosphere Potsdam with its three tropical event locations (event hall “Orangerie”, “Tropencamp” and the “Luncheon” restaurant) can also be rented. The butterfly house in the biosphere was opened in May 2009, and in 2016 its millionth visitor was celebrated.

In July 2016 it became known that the city of Potsdam was planning to close the biosphere. Operations should continue until November 30, 2017, after which the hall should be used for other purposes. For example, consideration was given to converting it into a multi-purpose hall or a private school. In April 2017, however, the city rowed back. Now a new private investor is to be found who will take over the loss-making hall for 20 years from 2018. The city is planning an annual grant of 1.9 million euros.

financing

The biosphere is operated by the municipal Pro Potsdam and had to be subsidized by the city of Potsdam with 1.7 million euros each in 2010 and 2011; before that, the subsidies were in some cases even higher. The construction cost 29 million euros and was funded with 21.5 million from state funds, under the condition that the hall must be used appropriately as a “basic tourist facility” by 2016. A new operator has been sought since 2010.
