Guido Masetti (born November 22, 1907 in Verona , Italy , † November 27, 1993 in Rome , Italy) was an Italian football goalkeeper .
Masetti is considered one of the best goalkeepers of the 1930s and became world champions with Italy in 1934 and 1938 .
Player career
In the club
Guido Masetti began his career with the club in his hometown, Hellas Verona . First he played in midfield , then he became a goalkeeper.
In 1930 Masetti moved to AS Roma , where he played until his retirement in 1943. The Italian made his Serie A debut on September 28, 1930 in a 1-1 away game at FC Modena . In the 1940/41 season there was speculation about a change Masetti to Calcio Padova , which is why he was relegated to the bench for half of the season. His team was then only just able to save themselves from relegation without the support in goal. In the 1941/42 season , Guido Masetti was again a regular and won the Italian championship with Roma under Alfréd Schaffer . In total, Guido Masetti completed 339 Serie A games for Gialloross .
In the national team
Masetti completed only two international matches for Italy , on April 5, 1936 and on November 12, 1939 against Switzerland . Nevertheless, he was able to celebrate winning the World Cup in Italy in 1934 and in France under coach Vittorio Pozzo . He was each substitute goalkeeper behind Giampiero Combi and Aldo Olivieri .
Coaching career
Guido Masetti's coaching career was not as successful as that as a player. First worked in 1943 as a player- coach at AS Roma and looked after the team during the Second World War , where he was able to win the Roman championship. He then acted in the same role at AS Gubbio in 1910 . Guido Masetti later returned to the Roma coaching bench several times as interim coach .
