Pietro Rava (born January 21, 1916 in Cassine ( AL ), † November 5, 2006 in Turin ) was an Italian football player and coach .

Rava was appointed Commendatore Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana on March 12, 2003 by the then President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi for his sporting services . He is still one of the icons of Juventus Turin club history .

During his playing career he was an accomplished defender. It was later referred to as the Zambrotta of the 1930s .

Before his death, Pietro Rava suffered from Alzheimer's disease . On October 27, 2006 he had to undergo surgery on a fractured thigh after falling in his apartment. He died on November 5, 2006 in the Ospedale Martini in Turin and with him the last surviving world champion from 1938.

Player career

In the club

Pietro Rava began his playing career with the US Alessandria . In 1935 he moved to Juventus Turin , for whom he played until 1950, except for a break in the 1946/47 season when he went back to Alessandria for a year. For Juve , he played a total of 330 games, scoring 15 goals and was one of the early favorite players of then club president Giovanni Agnelli . Rava moved to Novara Calcio for the 1950/51 season , where he ended his active career in 1951.

In the national team

Pietro Rava made his debut in the Italian national team on August 3, 1936 against the USA at the Summer Olympics in Berlin . He played all the games at this tournament and won the gold medal with his team by beating Austria 2-1 in the final .

In the years before the war Rava was a performer in the Italian national team and he was in 1938 under coach Vittorio Pozzo with the Azzurri in the World Cup in France champion . On December 1, 1946, Pietro Rava completed his last of a total of 30 international matches for Italy against Austria .

Pietro Rava, along with Alfredo Foni , Sergio Bertoni and Ugo Locatelli, is one of only four Italians who have been both world and Olympic champions in their careers.

Coaching career

After his playing career, Pietro Rava trained among others Sampdoria Genoa , the US Palermo , Calcio Padova , and the US Alessandria .
