Eraldo Monzeglio (born June 5, 1906 in Vignale Monferrato ( AL ), † November 3, 1981 in Turin ) was an Italian football player and coach .
During his playing days, the 1.73 m tall Monzeglio was considered an elegant defender who interpreted his role, especially in the World Cup system , excellently. He was twice world champion with Italy .
Player career
Eraldo Monzeglio made his debut in Italy's top division for AS Casale in the 1924/25 season. In the 1926/27 season he moved to FC Bologna , in 1935 he went to AS Roma , where he ended his career at the end of the 1938/39 season.
In the Italian national team , Eraldo Monzeglio made his debut on May 1, 1930 at 5-0 in Hungary .
At the soccer World Cup in 1934 , which took place in Italy, he was a regular under coach Vittorio Pozzo and was able to win the world championship title with the team by beating Czechoslovakia 2-1 in the final . During this time Monzeglio also got to know the then dictator Benito Mussolini and befriended him. Later he even became the tennis coach of Mussolini's sons Bruno and Vittorio and also a staunch fascist .
Eraldo Monzeglio was also back in the squad at the 1938 World Cup in France , but was only used in the opening game against Norway , which was also his last international match. After the 4-2 of his Squadra Azzurra in the final against Hungary, he was able to celebrate his second world title.
After the World Cup tournament, Monzeglio ended his national team career in which he completed 33 international matches, but could not score a goal.
Coaching career
Eraldo Monzeglio worked in the 1941/42 season for Roma as an advisor to trainer Alfréd Schaffer , who won the Scudetto that year and shortly afterwards volunteered for military service in the Soviet Union .
After the Second World War he worked as a coach at various clubs. First he worked at AC Pro Sesto , in the 1949/50 season he was hired by SSC Napoli , which he led to promotion to Serie A in the first year and coached until 1956.
Between 1958 and 1962 Monzeglio worked as head coach at Sampdoria Genoa , in 1964 he briefly followed Paulo Amaral in the coaching bench at Juventus Turin .
In the seasons 1965/66, 1966/67 and 1972/73 he finally trained, with a short interlude at AC Lecco , the FC Chiasso in Switzerland .
