Umberto Caligaris (born July 26, 1901 in Casale Monferrato , † October 19, 1940 in Turin ) was an Italian football player and coach .
Career
Umberto Caligaris began his football career at his hometown club, AS Casale . In 1928, Caligaris won the bronze medal with the Italian soccer team at the Summer Olympics . In the same year he moved to the emerging team of Juventus Turin . He was also a member of the victorious Italian team at the European Cup of National Football Teams from 1927 to 1930 .
Between 1931 and 1935 Umberto Caligaris won five consecutive Italian champions with the legendary Juventus team of the Quinquennio d'Oro .
In 1934 the defender was in Vittorio Pozzo's squad for the Italian national team for the football World Cup in his own country . Caligaris was not used under, but was still able to celebrate winning the world championship.
In 1935 he moved to Brescia Calcio in Serie B , where he ended his active career in 1937, after two years as a player- coach. In 1938/39 he coached Modena FC in Serie A. From 1939 until his death in 1940, the 59-time national player worked as the coach of Juventus Turin.
Umberto Caligaris died on October 19, 1940 at the age of 39. During an old man's game in which he and his old companions Giampiero Combi and Virginio Rosetta took part in the Stadio di Corso Sebastopoli , he had to leave the field after a few minutes and then be taken to the hospital, where he died of an aneurysm . Federico Munerati took over his position as coach of Juventus Turin .
In 2011 Caligaris was given a star on the Walk of Fame in the newly opened Juventus Stadium .
