Mario Varglien (born December 26, 1905 in Fiume , Austria-Hungary , today Rijeka , Croatia , † August 11, 1978 ) was an Italian football player and coach who played in defense during his active career .
His brother Giovanni was also a footballer, which is why Mario Varglien often appears in statistics as Varglien I.
Career
In the club
Mario Varglien began his playing career in his hometown of Fiume, after which he played for Pro Patria . In the summer of 1927 he moved to Juventus Turin , where he played until 1942. At Juve , he was a key player in the legendary Quinquennio d'Oro team , which under coach Carlo Carcano won five Italian championships in a row between 1931 and 1935 . A record that has not yet been broken. In total, he played 405 games in Juventus' dress and scored 17 goals.
Between 1952 and 1954, Mario Varglien was head coach at AS Roma . Before that he had already trained the US Triestina , Como Calcio and Pro Patria Calcio .
In the national team
Mario Varglien was appointed by coach Vittorio Pozzo in the squad of the Italian national team for the 1934 World Cup in Italy without having played a single international match. He was also not used in the tournament itself and thus became world champion without ever having played for his national team.
He completed his only international match on February 17, 1935 in a 2-1 win against France .
