Amedeo Biavati (born April 4, 1915 in Bologna , † April 22, 1979 ibid) was an Italian football player .

Biavati is considered one of the best Italian left wingers before the Second War . He was a fast, elegant player and a great dribbler . In 1938 he became soccer world champion with Italy .

Career

Amedeo Biavati began his career at the largest club in his hometown, FC Bologna , which was called AGC Bologna at that time and where he also spent most of his career. At the age of 18 he made his Serie A debut as a half - forward on May 21, 1933 in a 7-0 win against AS Casale , scoring two goals within two minutes. Just two weeks later, in a 3-0 win against AC Milan , he scored twice. Despite these strong performances, Biavati remained only a substitute player until 1934, as he had strong competition in his position with Raffaele Sansone and Bruno Maini . In 1934 he celebrated the first major success of his career by winning the Mitropa Cup.

1934/35 Amedeo Biavati played at Catania Calcio in Serie B , where he was a regular and scored nine goals. After his return to Bologna he was only able to slowly play his way into the team of the then coach Árpád Weisz . In 1935/36 and 1936/37 he won the Italian championship with the AGC Bologna . After another season as a top performer, Biavati, although he had never played an international match, was appointed by national coach Vittorio Pozzo in the Italian squad for the 1938 World Cup in France . As part of this tournament, he made his debut on June 12, 1938 in the quarter-final game against the hosts in the Squadra Azzurra . His performance in this game impressed Pozzo so much that he offered Biavati in the semifinals and final from the start and instead took Piero Pasinati from the team from Trieste . By beating Hungary 4-2 in the final , Amedeo Biavati finally won the football world championship with Italy.

This success also cemented his place in the AGC Bologna team. Under the Austrian coach Hermann Felsner , Biavati celebrated two more Scudetti in 1938/39 and 1940/41 . Then the Second World War interrupted his career. After resumption of play, Amedeo Biavati was on the field for the national team until 1947. In his last international match, on November 9, 1947 in Vienna against Austria , he suffered his first and only defeat as a national player with a 1: 5.

In 1948 Amedeo Biavati ended his active career at FC Bologna, after which he worked as a player- coach for some lower-class teams. Later he was an employee of FC Bologna in its sports facilities.
