Giampiero "Malik" Marini (born February 25, 1951 in Lodi , Italy ) is a former Italian football player and coach .
During his active career, Marini played as a midfielder , his greatest strength being his game overview. With Italy he became world champion in 1982 .
Player career
In the club
Giampiero Marini began his career with AC Fanfulla , then he played for Varese , Reggina Calcio , US Triestina and finally for Inter Milan , with whom he won the Italian championship and twice the Coppa Italia in the 1979/80 season . He played a total of 256 Serie A games and scored ten goals.
In the national team
Giampiero Marini made his debut on November 1, 1980 in a 2-0 win against Denmark in the national team . In total, he completed 20 international matches in which he failed to score. Marini's greatest success is winning the world title at the 1982 World Cup in Spain , where he played five games for Italy under coach Enzo Bearzot . Marini played his last game in the Squadra Azzurra on April 16, 1983 in a 0-1 win in Romania .
Coaching career
In the final stages of the 1993/94 season , Marini succeeded Osvaldo Bagnoli as coach of Inter Milan and was able to save the Nerazzurri from relegation from Serie A despite poor results in the championship. In the UEFA Cup, however, Marini led the club with two 1-0 victories against SV Austria Salzburg to win the title. After the season, Ottavio Bianchi Marinis succeeded as Inter coach.
In the summer of 1997 Giampiero Marini took up his second position as head coach. He immediately managed to lead the US Cremonese to promotion to Serie B. In the following season he was released shortly before Christmas 1998 after a series of negative results. His successor could not prevent Cremonese's relegation to the C1 series .
