Gaetano "Gai" Scirea [ɡa.eˈtaːno ʃiˈreːa] (born May 25, 1953 in Cernusco sul Naviglio , † September 3, 1989 in Babsk , Poland ) was an Italian football player .

Together with Franz Beckenbauer and Franco Baresi , he is considered to be one of the best players in the position of libero in the history of football.

Career

Scirea began his professional career as a midfielder at the former Series A -Verein Atalanta Bergamo in 1972. However, already in his first season he suffered a descent and played his second season as a professional in the series B . In the summer of 1974 he moved to Juventus Turin at the urging of Giampiero Boniperti . Here he quickly became the undisputed backing of the Turin defense for the following decade and replaced the long-time Libero of Juventus Sandro Salvadore in the position of Libero. Salvadore had just finished his career in 1974. As a player who was said to be able to “read” the game, he carefully coordinated the Turin defense: he was never even expelled from the field throughout his career. This earned him a lot of respect, also from his opponents. He is considered to be one of the most complete defenders in the history of football.

Scirea was also able to celebrate great successes in the Italian national team . He was part of the team that won the title in Spain under Enzo Bearzot in 1982 and made a total of 78 games with the national team in his career - 18 of them at world championships. He was the captain of the national team at the '86 World Cup .

He still holds Serie A and club records today. With 552 games played (377 of them in Serie A), he is Juventus' record player after Alessandro Del Piero . He was champion a total of seven times, including the prestigious 20th time in 1981/82.

After the Soccer World Cup in Mexico in 1986 , he decided in 1987, at the age of 34, to retire from active soccer and, at the request of his long-time friend Dino Zoff, took over the position of assistant coach at Juventus the following season .

death

On September 3, 1989, Gaetano Scirea was killed in a car accident in Poland. He and a local driver were on their way from Warsaw to Katowice in a Polski Fiat 125p to watch Juventus Turin next opponent in the UEFA Cup , Górnik Zabrze . Due to the unstable political situation in the country at the time, the driver had a few reserve canisters on board. After a collision with a truck , the car and with it the petrol cans caught fire and burned out. Scirea and his driver, trapped in the car, burned to death.

After Gaetano Scirea's death, many youth tournaments and fair play prizes were named after him. When the Stadio delle Alpi was inaugurated in Turin in the same year , its southern curve - the one in which the fanatical Ultràs of Juventus were positioned at the time - was named after Scirea ( curva Scirea ).
