Franco Causio (born February 1, 1949 in Lecce ) is a former Italian football player .

Career

Causio was right winger at Juventus Turin and, together with Roberto Bettega , who played as left winger, formed one of the best wing tongs in European club football of the 1970s. They also played together in the Italian national team for many years. In addition to numerous Italian championships and cup victories with Juve , he won the UEFA Cup in 1976/77 . He took part in three soccer world championships for Italy . His first, the 1974 World Cup in Germany , ended in a big disappointment for him and all of Italy after being eliminated in the preliminary round. Things went better for him at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina . Italy remained undefeated until the last group game of the second final round against the Netherlands . In the preliminary round, after a 1-0 win against the hosts and eventual world champions Argentina, they played the role of favorites. After the surprise loss to the Dutch, Italy played in the third place match against Brazil . Causio gave Italy the lead with a goal in the 38th minute, but Brazil eventually won the game 2-1. Italy finished fourth.

At the Soccer World Cup in Spain in 1982 , Causio no longer had the shape of bygone days due to injuries. And it was precisely this tournament that led to the greatest triumph of Italian football after the Second World War . Italy moved into the final against Germany and Causios longtime coach Enzo Bearzot did him a great honor by already clearly led him just before the finish in the 89th minute when Italy and secure world champion was for Alessandro Altobelli einwechselte so that it celebrated the big victory on the pitch together with his colleagues. In total, Causio made eleven World Cup appearances with one goal. Between 1972 and 1983 he played 63 international matches for the Azzurri , scoring six goals. Franco Causio ended his career at Udinese Calcio . At the Pelé Cup 1993 he was named "Best Player", the Italian senior team (over 34) won the tournament.
