history

AS Cittadella was created in 1973 from the merger of Cittadellese and Olympia Cittadella . This merger was initiated by Angelo Gabrielli to establish a team from Cittadella in professional football. The first few years of existence were difficult due to the rivalry between the members of the two original clubs. In 1980 AS Cittadella achieved their first success when they won the Serie D Coppa Italia . In 1988/89 he was promoted to the C2 series . A short time later, the team from the small town of Cittadella was promoted to the next higher class, the Lega Pro Prima Divisione , then called Serie C1.

In 2001, the club rose to the second Italian division, Serie B , for the first time. During the season they played at the Stadio Euganeo in Padova because the capacity of the stadium in Cittadella did not meet the requirements of Serie B. While the team was playing there, the club called itself AS Cittadella Padova . However, AS Cittadella rose again in the first season in Serie B. Six seasons in the Lega Pro Prima Divisione followed. In the 2007/08 season, Cittadella qualified third in the table after winning relegation against Foligno Calcio and US Cremonese again for Serie B. Since then, Cittadella has always managed to stay in the league. In the 2009/10 season , the team reached rank 6 in the table, whereupon they had the opportunity to move up to Serie A. In the relegation games for promotion, however, Cittadella failed in the semifinals to Brescia Calcio .

Stadion

AS Cittadella plays its home games in the Stadio Pier Cesare Tombolato in Cittadella . The stadium has a capacity of 7,623. It was built in 1981 and the original capacity was only 4,000 seats. Since this number did not correspond to the statutes of Serie B , the club had to move to the Stadio Euganeo , the home of Padova Calcio , when it was promoted to the second Italian division for the first time . After relegation to the Lega Pro Prima Divisione in 2002, they moved back to the home stadium. When they were promoted to Serie B again in 2008, the club renovated the Stadio Pier Cesare Tombolato, which is named after a goalkeeper who died in a collision on the field in 1957 at the age of 18, so that it now offered space for 7,623 people. For the first season games of the 2008/09 season, the club moved to Treviso , as construction work was still going on.
