Damiano Tommasi (born May 17, 1974 in Negrar ) is a former Italian football player . He was considered an exemplary player and is also committed to social aspects outside of the field of play.
career
Tommasi began his career at Hellas Verona , for whom he played in Serie B between 1993 and 1996 . In 1996 he moved to Serie A at AS Roma . Here he quickly became a regular player and played 262 league games for the Romans in the following ten years. In the summer of 2004 he suffered a serious knee injury in a pre-season game against Stoke City in a collision with the opponent, which made him sideline for a long time. Therefore, in 2005, he signed a one-year contract for young players for around 1500 euros per month - it is said that he initiated the agreement himself. In October 2005 he celebrated his return to the field. In the summer of 2006 he moved to UD Levante in the Primera División .
Tommasi played 25 times for the Italian national team between 1998, his debut against Spain , and 2003 . On September 5, 2001, he scored his only international goal in a 1-0 win over Morocco . He took part in the 2002 World Cup, where he was used four times. He was wrongly denied a goal in the round of 16 against South Korea, which resulted in the end for Italy. Before that, he was active for several national youth teams and took part in the 1996 Olympic Games , where he played three games.
After his active career, he became president of the Italian professional soccer union AIC in 2011.
In 2015, at the age of 41, the midfielder joined the San Marino club SP La Fiorita .
