Son Bou, Sant Jaume and Torre Solí Nou form a coherent holiday complex on the south coast, where one of the longest sandy beaches of Menorca, the 2.5 km long Playa de Son Bou , is located. A holiday resort further east on the coast is Cala en Porter. These are the main tourist centers in the municipality of Alaior.
The village of Cales Coves is not located on the bay of the same name (this is not inhabited), but around 1900 meters inland on the road to the bay ( Caminou de Cales Coves ).
Places of history
In the southwest of the parish on the beach of Son Bou are the remains of the early Christian basilica of Son Bou .
Almost seven kilometers east of it, on the bay of Cales Coves , is the Cales Coves necropolis with more than 90 natural and artificial burial caves from the Bronze Age (1200–850 BC) and the subsequent Iron Age (850–123 BC) . Monumental tombs near the Me-1 in the direction of Maó, the Navetas by Rafal Rubí and Biniac date from the Bronze Age .
economy
Alaior is best known for making shoes and cheese. One of the most successful shoe brands in Spain, Pons Quintana, has its origins in Alaior. Shoes are still handcrafted there today, with Pons Quintana being best known for its artfully braided shoes.
The Queso de Mahon actually comes from Alaior, where the two largest manufacturers, Coinga and La Payesa, have their headquarters. In the area around Alaior and other communities there is intensive livestock farming, some of the milk obtained from it is still processed into cheese by the farmers themselves. The cheese is named Mahón Menorca cheese ( Queso de Mahon ) from the Castilian name of the island's capital Maó, as in the past it was mainly exported from here by ship all over the world.
The Spanish ice cream brand La Menorquina was also founded in Alaior, but is now part of an international group and production takes place on the mainland.
Personalities
