history

On April 18, 1756, an Easter Sunday, around twelve thousand French soldiers landed on the beach of Santandria under the leadership of Marshal Duc de Richelieu , accompanied by a powerful fleet of Admiral Galissonnière, which began with the military siege of the Castle of San Felipe and with surrender of Britain ended. On June 29, 1756 the English signed the surrender treaty.

On January 8, 1762, the French jurisdiction authorized the French governor of the island, Comte de Lannion , to build a settlement on the historic area of la Garriga de Binifadet . The place got its name in honor of King Lluís XV. (France) and was laid out in the typical straightforward French urban style during the brief French rule on Menorca (1756–1763).

Sant Lluís was declared an independent municipality in 1904, until that time Sant Lluis was under the administration of the capital Maó .
