Walter Adrián Samuel (born March 23, 1978 in Laborde , Córdoba Province ) is a former Argentine soccer player and current soccer coach . Most recently he was under contract with FC Basel in the Swiss Super League from July 2014 to June 2016 . In the 2017/18 season he was assistant coach at FC Lugano .

The defender , known by his fans as Il Muro (The Wall), began his career in 1996 like Gabriel Heinze with Newell's Old Boys . In 1997/98 he moved to the Boca Juniors . With this club he won the Apertura in 1998 and the Clausura championship in 1999 and the most important South American club competition in 2000 - the Copa Libertadores .

In July 2000 he moved to Italy for 23 million euros and signed a contract with AS Roma . With his strong and constant performance, he helped the Romans to their third championship title in their club history in his first season. In 2004 he played for Real Madrid for a year and then returned to Italy, where he signed a contract with the traditional club Inter Milan .

In the 2009/10 season , Samuel and the Brazilian Lúcio formed the core of the central defense of Inter Milan and played such a decisive role in the fact that the Nerazzuri was the first Italian club to win the so-called triple . For his performances this season he was named Serie A Defender of the Year by Juventus Turin in January 2011 together with Giorgio Chiellini . On May 11, 2012, Samuel extended his contract with Inter Milan for a further year until June 30, 2013. On June 13, 2013, he extended his contract for a further year.

His record with Inter Milan is impressive. With this club Samuel won the Supercup in 2006 and 2008 ; 2006, 2010 and 2011 the Coppa Italia ; 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 the Italian championship and 2010 the Champions League .

After the contract with Inter Milan had expired, Samuel moved to FC Basel in the Swiss Super League for the 2014/15 season . The 36-year-old got a one-year contract there, which was extended for another year on June 18, 2015. He made his debut for the new club on matchday 7 in a 3-1 home win against BSC Young Boys , in which he was in the starting line-up and played over 90 minutes. The 2014/15 season was very successful for FC Basel. The team finished the soccer championship 2014/15 for the 18th time as champions (for the 6th time in a row) with 12 points ahead of the 2nd placed BSC Young Boys and 25 points ahead of 3rd placed FC Zurich . Basel was repeatedly in the final of the Swiss Cup , which was lost to FC Sion 0: 3. In the 2014/15 Champions League season , Basel advanced to the round of 16. During the 2014/15 season, FC Basel played a total of 65 games (36 championship, 6 cups, 8 Champions League and 15 test games). Under coach Paulo Sousa , Samuel had a total of 26 appearances, including 13 in the Super League, 1 in the Cup, 4 in the Champions League and 8 in friendly matches.

Samuel announced during the 2015/16 season that he would retire at the end of the season. Under coach Urs Fischer , Samuel won the Swiss championship title for the second time with FCB at the end of the 2015/16 season . For the club it was the 7th title in a row and the 19th title in the club's history.

National team

With the youth selection of the Argentine national team , Samuel won, among other things, the Junior Soccer World Cup in 1997 in Malaysia . He played his first game in the Argentine senior team on February 3, 1999 against Venezuela .

Samuel made 56 full caps for his country. He took part in the 1999 Copa America , the 2002 World Cup and the 2005 Confederations Cup . He was not taken into account for the 2006 World Cup . In May 2010 he was appointed to the squad for the World Cup in South Africa by Diego Maradona . But he only played two games because he injured himself during his second appearance.
