Because of his strong and consistent performances in Paris and because of his combative demeanor, he soon became a crowd favorite. He was voted the most valuable defensive player in the club's history by the Parisian fans.

In 2004, Heinze moved to Manchester United , where he immediately became a crowd favorite and performed particularly well in his first season.

Due to an injury, he could not get the usual performance in the 2006/07 season, but was ultimately able to prevail in the duel for the position of left-back against Patrice Evra and successfully end the year by winning the championship.

In August 2007 Heinze moved to Real Madrid , where he was supposed to close the gap in the left defense created by the departure of Roberto Carlos . He signed a four-year contract. He originally wanted to move to Liverpool , but Manchester United did not want to hand him over to a direct competitor for the championship.

In July 2009 Heinze moved to Olympique Marseille , where he signed a contract until 2012. At the end of May 2011 Heinze announced that he wanted to leave Marseille early due to differences with the club management despite the ongoing contract. In July 2011 there was a move to Italy to AS Roma .

He left Rome in mid-2012 and went back to his first club, Newell's Old Boys. With the Leprosos he achieved his first title in Argentina, the Torneo Final 2013. After the 2013/2014 season, he ended his playing career there in May 2014.
