Giuseppe Favalli (born January 8, 1972 in Orzinuovi (BS) , Italy ) is a former Italian football player . He mostly played as a left full-back or in central defense . Favalli was most recently under contract with AC Milan and ended his career at the end of June 2010 after the contract expired.

Club career

Cremonese

Giuseppe Favalli began his football career with the Lombard club US Cremonese . After playing in the club's youth, he made his professional debut in the Italian Serie B on April 16, 1989 at the age of 17 and then played another game in the Italian second division. On August 27 of the same year Favalli ran after the rise of Cremonese for the first time in the top division Serie A in the 1: 2 defeat at Inter Milan . In his first full professional season he was able to establish himself as a regular player. He was finally promoted to a high performer in the 1990/1991 season. He played a total of 37 competitive games for Cremonese, which has since been relegated to Serie B. On January 13, 1991, he also scored his first goal as a professional footballer in the league game against FC Modena . Thanks also to Favalli's achievements, Cremonese rose again to Serie A. Here, too, he was able to convince as a regular and scored his first goal in the top division on October 20 against Hellas Verona . After a total of 102 competitive games in four seasons, Favalli left the club at the end of the 1992/1993 season .

Lazio Rome

In the summer of 1992 Favalli signed a contract with Lazio Rome . There they valued his tactical cleverness, his tackle strength and the courage to advance into the opposing half, which enabled him to score six goals in twelve seasons at Lazio. His persistence and loyalty quickly made the defender a fan favorite. In his first season with the top Italian club, Favalli became a regular player. In the 1993/94 UEFA Cup , Favalli played his first two European Cup games, and a year later he also scored his first European Cup goal. Although he was never able to play all of the season's games due to minor injuries, Favalli completed a total of 401 competitive games for Lazio Rome by the summer of 2004, making him the player with the most appearances in the club's history. In 1998 he was able to win the first club title of his career when he was able to defeat AC Milan with Lazio in the two legs of the Coppa Italia final. He also reached the final of the UEFA Cup with Lazio , where the title was missed by a 3-0 defeat against Inter Milan . Favalli was unable to play in the Supercup victory against Juventus Turin in the summer , but in the 1998/1999 season Favalli was again left full-back for the Lazio team, which won the last European Cup winners' Cup with a 2-1 in the final against RCD Mallorca . The streak of success for the capital city club and Favalli did not end: in the summer of 1999 the UEFA Super Cup was won by a 1-0 win against Champions League winners Manchester United , with Favalli only on the bench. A little later Favalli played his first game in the UEFA Champions League , but due to injury, he was only able to play 25 competitive games in the double victory of Lazios in the championship and cup. After all, he was in the second leg of the Coppa Italia final on the place where the title could be secured by a 0-0 at Inter Milan. In the summer Favalli was finally able to play in the Supercup, which Lazio also won against Inter (4: 3).

Then there were no further titles for Lazio. The successful team of the previous years broke up over time, top performers like Pavel Nedvěd left the club. On October 25, 2000 Favalli scored his only Champions League goal in a 5-1 win against Shakhtar Donetsk , when he was successful to the 1-1 intermediate result. He had already received the number 19 instead of his previous shirt number 5. Favalli remained an important part of the team in the following seasons, and after the departure of previous captain Alessandro Nesta in the summer of 2002, Favalli took over the captaincy. In the 2003/2004 season he played 43 competitive games, most of them within one season of his career. But after the end of the season, Favalli's expiring contract was not renewed, the financial problems of Lazios required savings in players' salaries. At the end of his long and successful time with the Romans, the fan favorite and record player of the club and the team again won the Coppa Italia with a 2-0 and 2-2 win against Juventus.

Inter Milan

Favalli then signed a two-year contract with Inter Milan . Although he was part of the team and delivered reliable performance, he did not quite achieve the status of unrestricted performer at Inter. In two seasons Favalli played 68 games for the club. In the 2004/2005 season he celebrated winning the Coppa Italia with Inter, where he only ran from the start in the two finals against AS Roma . Favalli was also on the pitch for the Milanese Super Cup victory in the summer. The following year Favalli won his third Italian Cup victory in a row and was in the starting line-up in both finals against AS Roma (1-1; 3-1). In addition, the club was subsequently awarded the championship, as the actual first Juventus Turin was involved in the manipulation scandal about postponed games. Since Inter signed the left-back Fabio Grosso for the position of Favallis in the summer of 2006 and thus his chances of a regular place were very small, he decided not to extend his contract.

AC Milan

For the 2006/07 season , the Italian moved to local rivals AC Milan . In his first season, however, Favalli was only a supplementary player. Although he was only used 15 times in Serie A, he scored for the only time in his career two goals in the top division in a season. In 2007 he won the UEFA Champions League, the biggest title of his career. In the final win against Liverpool FC , Favalli was substituted on for Clarence Seedorf in stoppage time. In the later match for the UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla FC , which AC also won, he was just as little used as in the Club World Cup in December, which Milan also finished as the winner. In the two following seasons he was at least an important back-up for the regular players in Serie A and was able to play a few missions. The 2009/10 season was his last as a professional footballer. In this he could only play 18 competitive games.

On May 15, 2010, Giuseppe Favalli completed his last match as a professional footballer in AC Milan's 3-0 win against Juventus Turin in San Siro in the last game of the season. In the 61st minute, the 38-year-old was replaced by Alessandro Nesta to the applause of the fans . For Milan he had played 99 games in four years. After 22 successful seasons as a professional, he had fifteen trophies and thus all relevant football club titles apart from the UEFA Cup. In 486 Serie A games Favalli scored seven goals, he was also used in 66 games in the Italian Cup and 81 European Cup games (two goals). In total, he played in 670 competitive games in his career. As the record player in Lazio , Favalli is one of the most important players in the club's history.

National team

Even before his professional debut for Cremonese, Favalli was nominated for the first time for the Italian U-18 national team. On February 21, 1989, he made his debut in a 1-0 win against Sweden. In the course of the year, the defender was on the field in all eight other games of the selection and scored a goal in the 3-2 against the Italian U-17 selection. On December 20, 1989 in a 1-0 win against Spain , Favalli was appointed to the U-21 national team for the first time . After two more test matches, he also played against Hungary at the start of the qualification for the U-21 European Football Championship in 1992 and scored the winning goal to make it 1-0. With a 2-1 win over Norway, Italy qualified for the quarter-finals in 1991. Favalli had played in all six qualifying games and also the test games in between. He was also on the field in the two victories in the quarter-finals against Czechoslovakia . Although he had to forego the semi-final second leg against Denmark , he played central defense again in the finals against Sweden . With a 2-0 win in Ferrara and a 0-1 win in Växjö , Italy finally won the European title and qualified for the football tournament at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona . Favalli played the two preparation games, the three group games and the quarter-finals against Spain (0-1). This was followed by nine more Favallis games for the U-21s, with which he was able to qualify for the European Championship again. In the 3-0 win against Malta on March 25, 1993, he scored another goal.

But Favalli no longer took part in the finals in France. As one of the top performers of the U-21 team, he was nominated for the first time for the senior squad on September 7, 1994 by national coach Arrigo Sacchi , but was not yet used against Slovenia . The international debut took place on October 8th against Estonia (2-0). Two further appointments followed in 1994, but he was no longer used. He played his second international match four years later in a 2-2 draw against Spain . Then there was another longer international break, it was not until 2004 that the defender was reappointed by coach Giovanni Trapattoni in preparation for the 2004 European Football Championship . In the preliminary round from the Italians there, Favalli only came to a brief appearance in the 1-1 draw against Sweden . He played his last international match on September 4th in a 2-1 win in the World Cup qualifier against Norway . In the senior national team, Favalli never got beyond the status of supplementary player.
