Herbert Tampere

Herbert Tampere (born January 19 July / February 1,  1909 greg. In the village of Uniküla, rural community Rannu , Livonia ; † January 19, 1975 in Rannu) was an Estonian folklorist and musicologist .

Life

Tampere studied from 1927 to 1933 at the Philosophical Faculty of the University in Tartu in southern Estonia (German Dorpat ). From 1928 he worked at the "Archive for Estonian Folk Poetry" ( Eesti Rahvaluule Arhiiv ) in Tartu and was already doing field research .

In 1935 he published his first anthology of Estonian folk songs . He was responsible for the publication of volumes III (1938 from the Kuusalu region ), IV (1941, Karksi region ) of the folk song collections Vana Kannel ("Old Harp"). After his death, his wife Erna Tampere published Volume V ( Mustjala ) with the collective results of the two researchers in 1985 .

Until 1940 and in the years 1952 to 1967 Tampere was responsible for the folk music department of the Estonian Literature Museum (Eesti Kirjandusmuuseum) in Tartu. After a year imprisonment by the Soviet occupation authorities, he was able to work as a teacher at the State Conservatory in Tallinn from 1945 to 1951 . From 1967 to 1975 he worked at the Tallinn Music High School.

In 1960 Tampere defended his dissertation on a topic of folk music before the Academy of Sciences of the Estonian SSR .
