The Coppa Italia , the Italian soccer cup competition, began in the 2007/08 season on August 14, 2007 with the first round matches and ended on May 24, 2008 with the final between AS Roma and Inter Milan . The Roma won the match and became the ninth time in their club history Cup winner. As both finalists moved into the Champions League via the league , the seventh-placed Udinese Calcio qualified for the 2008/09 UEFA Cup instead . It was the fourth edition of this final pairing in a row in which both Inter and Rome won two titles.
mode
The mode was fundamentally changed for the 60th edition of the competition. In contrast to previous events, only the Serie A and Serie B teams were eligible to play. A total of 42 clubs took part. In the first round, the teams from Serie B of the 2007/08 season and the second and third placed teams of the 2006/07 season (promoted to Serie A) played. The remaining teams in Serie A - with the exception of the eight best placed last season - started in the third round, while the remaining eight teams joined the field in the round of 16.
The eighth, quarter and semi-finals were each decided in the first and second leg, all other rounds were only decided in one game.
Due to the enormous protests of the third and fourth division teams, which, in contrast to earlier events, were not eligible to participate, the mode was changed again next year.
