Tromsøbrua

The Tromsø Bridge ( Norwegian "Tromsøbrua") is a road bridge in the northern Norwegian city of Tromsø that spans the Tromsøysund . The bridge connects the center of the city on the island of Tromsøya with the Tromsø district of Tromsdalen on the mainland. With a length of 1036 meters, the structure was Northern Europe's largest prestressed concrete bridge after its completion in 1960 . The slightly arched girder bridge with its slender columns served as a model for subsequent prestressed concrete bridges throughout Norway . Along with the Arctic Cathedral and the Tromsdalstinden mountain, it is also one of the most striking landmarks in Tromsø.

The Fylkesvei 862 trunk road runs over the two-lane road bridge and stretches from Tromsdalen to the island of Senja in the municipality of Berg .

history

Security bars against attempted suicide

After Erling Kjeldsen from Tromsø put forward his idea of building a bridge or a tunnel, the Tromsø and Surrounding Bridge Association was formed in 1951 (Tromsø og Omegn Bruforening) . The public limited company Tromsøbrua A / S was founded in 1954 so that the construction project could be approved by the authorities and the financing secured . A year later, a majority in Storting spoke out in favor of both state funding and toll financing for the project. On July 3, 1960, after three years of construction, the structure, which cost 13.3 million NKR and which replaced ferry traffic, was inaugurated by the Norwegian Minister of State Einar Gerhardsen .

In 1963 Tromsøbrua was awarded the Betongtavlen Architecture Prize, a prize sponsored by the Norwegian Association of Architects and the Norwegian Concrete Association . The jury justified its decision with the "use of concrete in an aesthetically and technically excellent way."

In 2005, a 2.5 meter high grid was installed on the bridge to protect it against attempted suicide. Before that, Tromsøbrua was one of the nationwide preferred destinations for suicides.

Since April 2008, the Tromsøbrua has been recognized as a cultural asset worthy of protection by decision of the head of the Riksantikvaren monument protection authority , Nils Marstein . The measure places road structures and facilities under protection, which as part of the Norwegian road network represent their historical development.
