Tromsøya (North Sami: Romssasuolu ) is an island between the straits Tromsøysund and Sandnessund between the mainland of Norway and the island Kvaløya in Tromsø municipality in Fylke Troms og Finn Mark .
In the east of the island is the center of the city of Tromsø and the University of Tromsø , the University Hospital of Northern Norway and the Tromsø Museum are located here. Tromsø's Langnes Airport is on the west side. The island is linked to the Tromsdalen district by the Tromsøbrua bridge and the Tromsøysund tunnel . The Sandnessundbrua bridge provides a connection to the Kvaløysletta district on the island of Kvaløya . On the island itself are the districts of Sommerlyst, Mortensnes, Nordre and Søndre Tromsøya and the center itself. Tromsøya has 36,088 inhabitants (as of 2012) and a population density of 1,583 inhabitants per square kilometer.
Tromsøya, with an area of 22.79 square kilometers, is about ten kilometers long and about four kilometers wide in a north-south direction. In the middle of the island lies the Prestvannet lake , which was dammed in 1867. Even though large parts of the island are built up, forest areas extend along the ridge in the north of the island. The highest point on the island is the Varden with 159 moh in the northern part.
Skansen , Tusenårssted of Tromsø Municipality, is located in the center of Tromsø in the east of the island, south of the Tromsøbrua.
