Founded in 1872, the Tromsø Museum (full name: Tromsø Museum - Universitetsmuseet , TMU for short) in the Norwegian city of Tromsø is the oldest scientific institution in northern Norway . It is divided into two sections: one for natural science and one for cultural studies. The research of the region over the past hundred years is documented in collections. The four sections open to the public include the Polar Museum in the city center, the Tromsø Museum itself in Sørøya , the ship M / S Polstjerna in Sørbyen and the Arctic-Alpine Botanical Garden (Tromsø arktisk-alpin botanisk hage) in Breivika . Other departments are the photo archive, a museum library and the Northern Norwegian Folk Music Collection (Nordnorsk Folkemusikksamling) .
In 1976 the museum was incorporated into the University of Tromsø . In 2010 the Tromsø Museum merged with the Polar Museum.
