The Polar Museum ( Norwegian Polarmuseet ) in the northern Norwegian city of Tromsø shows exhibitions about Norwegian polar expeditions and fishing traditions in the polar regions . These include special exhibitions about polar bears and the research activities of Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen . The University of Tromsø operates the museum, which merged with the Tromsø Museum in early 2010 .

The museum opened in 1978 on the 50th anniversary of Roald Amundsen's last polar voyage as part of a rescue operation. From Tromsø, the polar explorer headed for Spitsbergen to look for Umberto Nobile and the airship Italia .

The Polar Museum is located in the area of the Skansen Open Air Museum and is one of a series of pier houses that resemble Bryggen in Bergen . The museum is housed in the former Toldbodbrygga customs station , which was used by customs as a warehouse and administration building until 1970. The customs post, which was built in 1833, has been recognized as a cultural asset worthy of protection since 2000, together with the entire row of houses by the “Reichsantiquar” (Riksantikvar) .
