Bouquenom (German Bockenheim , Alsatian Buckenum , Buggenum ) was the administrative seat of the County of Saar Werden on the Upper Saar in the Middle Ages . In 1794, the town on the right bank of the Saar united with the town of Neu- Saar Werden on the left bank of the Saar to form the town of Sarre-Union (hence in the name of Union).

history

In 1397, after the death of the last Count of the County of Saar Werden, the Lords of Moers inherited the County of Saar Werden. The places Saar Werden and Bockenheim were a fiefdom of the Bishop of Metz . After the arrival of the County of Saar to Nassau-Saarbrücken in 1527 and the introduction of the Reformation in 1556 under Count Adolf von Nassau-Saarbrücken, the two places and their surrounding area became a constant bone of contention between the Catholic House of Lorraine and the Protestant House of Nassau . Nassau had inherited the territories, Lorraine had been enfeoffed with the two places by the Bishop of Metz. In 1669, Lorraine and Nassau-Saarbrücken reached the following compromise at the Reichstag in Regensburg: Bockenheim and Saar Werden came to Lorraine, the surrounding area to Nassau-Saarbrücken. The Peace of Rijswijk in 1697 confirmed the House of Lorraine in possession of the places Saar Werden and Bockenheim, the surrounding area was confirmed in Nassau-Saarbrücken, and in 1701 a new one with Neu-Saar Werden (French: Ville Neuve de Sarrewerden) on the left bank of the Saar immediately opposite Bockenheim Created administrative center for his possessions. The now insignificant Saar becoming half an hour up the Saar has been differentiated as Old Saar become since the foundation of New Saar. In 1766, after the death of the last Duke of Lorraine Stanislaus I. Leszczyński , the towns of Alt-Saar Werden and Bockenheim fell to the Kingdom of France .

The French Revolution brought about a political reorganization in 1794 and finally the amalgamation of the town of Bockenheim on the right of the Saar with the town of Neu-Saar Werden (French: Ville Neuve de Sarrewerden) on the left of the Saar under the new common name Sarre-Union . It became the seat of the canton of the same name in the Saverne arrondissement of the Bas-Rhin department of the Alsace region and remained the capital of Crooked Alsace ( Alsace Bossue ).
