Location of the Arrondissement of Saverne in the Bas-Rhin department

The Arrondissement Saverne is an administrative district in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region of France ( Alsace until the end of 2015 ).

history

On March 4, 1790, with the establishment of the Bas-Rhin department, the area probably belonged to the "Strasbourg district".

Some time later the "District Sarre-Union" was founded, which essentially coincided with the present-day arrondissement.

With the establishment of the arrondissements on February 17, 1800, the new arrondissement Saverne was created.

Since May 18, 1871, the area belonged to the district of Zabern (French: Saverne) in the Lower Alsace district of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine . At that time the district covered 1004 km² and in 1885 had 86,558 inhabitants.

In the course of the reintegration of Alsace into France on June 28, 1919 based on the Treaty of Versailles , the name was changed back to "Arrondissement Saverne".

On January 1, 2015, the department was enlarged to include the municipalities of the dissolved arrondissement Strasbourg-Campagne .

The arrondissement borders in the north on the arrondissement Sarreguemines in the department Moselle , in the east on the arrondissements Haguenau-Wissembourg and Strasbourg , in the south on the arrondissement Molsheim and in the west on the arrondissements Sarrebourg , Château-Salins and Forbach in the department Moselle.
