history

In 1793 France claimed the county of Saar and Eschwiller received in the course of the French Revolution (1789–1799) as Eschveiller the status of a municipality and in 1801 the right to local self-government. Due to changes in territory after the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871) and the First World War (1914–1918), Eschwiller belonged to Germany from 1871 to 1919.
