The name of the place was first mentioned in a document in 820. In 1474, Gougenheim became the capital of the Kochersberg Ballei , which at that time consisted of 28 communities. The house of the executioner of the Ballei was outside of Gougenheim and was destroyed in 1976. The last executioner from Gougenheim married a daughter of the executioner from Sarrebourg , as was the custom. He died on June 18, 1808.

Culture and sights
The Saint-Laurent chapel was built from 1574 and is dedicated to Lawrence of Rome . The walls of the chapel are made of limestone and sandstone . In some places the quarry stone was replaced by bricks . The chapel is listed as a monument historique .
The Saint-Laurent church dates from the 12th century. The bell tower was later damaged in a fire. The nave was replaced by a new nave from 1749. The front door was enlarged in 1843. The walls of the church are made of limestone and sandstone, partially arranged as Opus spicatum . Two shield arches have been preserved on the ground floor, as well as an ornate ribbed vault , which is, however, in poor condition. The lintel of one of the doors that lead into the nave from the south is decorated with the grill grate of Laurentius. The walls of the interior are adorned with paintings of the evangelists . The parish church is also a monument historique.
The Maison d'artisan ( Craftsman's House) was built around 1681. This year can be found in the ceiling beam of the loggia . The house belonged to a bricklayer or carpenter .
