Mackwiller ( German Mackweiler ) is a French commune with 575 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Bas-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It is in Crooked Alsace .

history

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Mackwiller belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the district of Zabern in the district of Lower Alsace .

archeology

In 1955, substantial remains of a mithraium were excavated in Mackwiller by Jean-Jacques Hatt . The find has since been on display in the Musée archéologique de Strasbourg . Large-format cuboids from Roman times can be seen on the nave of the church . It is believed that they go back to a former temple.
